The A, B , C’s of Beginner Vegetable Gardening

Basket of assorted vegetables in field

If you’re a beginner planting your first garden, this advice will help you to plan and grow your own vegetables.

Start small. As beginners we tend to plant too much too soon and way more than we need. Unless you want to share with the neighbours, plan carefully.

A – Plant in a sunny location! The garden needs 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day.

B – Use good soft soil with proper drainage! If the planter doesn’t have drainage holes the vegetables will turn to compost tea.

C – Spacing!. Read the label and plan your space tall to small, wide to skinny!

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has done all the research for you. A planting date calculator for your area and you can get planting reminders.
